Chaplain comes to The Diamond Mine with a great deal of experience and success. Chaplain has been a successful coach at the High School and College levels. While a high school coach, Chaplain was named Upper East Tennessee Coach of the year while rebuilding Johnson County High School into a consistent winner. In College he was named the Conference Coach of the Year, Regional Coach of the Year, Diamond Baseball Coach of the year and Rawlings Baseball Coach of the Year. He is the all-time leader in wins at Montreat College. While in college Chaplain guided his teams to 3 Conference championships, 1 Co Conference Championship, 1 tournament championship and had many players named to the All Conference and All Region teams. He also coached two Conference Players of the Year and two NAIA All Americans during his tenure there. Chaplain took a program that was making the transition from a two year to a 4 year program and turned them into a success. Chaplain's teams averaged 30 wins a year for his tenure but averaged 35 wins a year his last 9 years. His teams were ranked in the top 25 in the country and even reached the top 10 once. He guided the 1999 team to a school record 48 wins.
Chaplain competed at Hiwassee College his Freshman year and was 2-3 with a 4.06 ERA but after transferring to Georgia College, Chaplain completed a three year stint of excellence. Chaplain went 31-7 in his three years at Georgia College and averaged nearly 100 innings per year while pitching for the late John Kurtz. Chaplain had a 2.86 career ERA which included a 10-3 Sophomore year with a 1.99 ERA and a All District selection. Chaplain won games in the conference tournament, regional tournament and also the college World Series.
Chaplain has established The Pitching University at The Diamond Mine and is developing a great deal of pitchers at all ages. The series of courses named The Competitive Pitcher, The Dynamic Pitcher and The Complete pitcher have caught on with Western North Carolina. The velocity program named The Dynamic Pitcher series has helped many pitchers to increase their velocity and make them more competitive.
Chaplain has also developed the B.E.S.T Hitting system that the Diamond Mine uses for their base instruction. The 8 week hitting system has proved over the years to effectively help to develop both baseball and softball players' skills, help them become more confident and competitive.
